2009 Cross of Christ Cabinet Goals

On Sunday, March 15, the Cross of Christ Cabinets convened to create goals on which the cabinets will focus. Each cabinet was to write three goals: the first goal to focus on the 50th Anniversary celebration, the second goal to be completed by next year’s annual meeting, and finally, the third goal to be completed in the next three to ten years. The council member leading the cabinet is indicated in parentheses after the cabinet name.  If you would like to help with a goal or have an idea about one of the goals, please contact the council member indicated. The goals composed at that meeting are as follows:

Education Cabinet (Jeanne Tippery):

Goal #1: Leading up to our anniversary celebration in 2010, our goal is to educate our youth about the roots and history of Cross of Christ so that our youth will be able to appreciate the gift of our history and be able to pass it on to future generations.

Goal #2: As a “Book of Faith” congregation, our goal is to involve 20 adults in the first year of our Book of Faith initiative.

Goal #3: By 2014, our goal is to get 75 percent of our families with children to participate in education programs (such as Sunday school, Vacation Bible school, confirmation and Bible camp) sponsored by Cross of Christ.

Evangelism Cabinet (Lynn Meyer and Darlene Paulson):

Goal #1: To bring inactive members back to the church, those members listed as inactive or who have not been attending worship during the past several months will be contacted in person or by phone or letter inviting them to our Cross of Christ 50th Year celebration. This contact will be initiated by a group led by the pastors.

Goal #2: To promote familiarity among members and to promote Cross of Christ ministries, a new photo directory will be published during 2009. The goal is to have no fewer than 75 percent of the active members participate by having their photo in this directory.

Goal #3: We will develop a program for pastors, members and the Parish Nurse to improve and build on the Cross of Christ visitation ministry including pastoral care, communion visits, and health education and welfare in order to better minister to these needs of our congregation and community at large. The program will include cottage listening sessions. Within five years we want to have 30 percent of our inactive members be re-considered active.

Finance Cabinet (Sheri Johnson, Mickey Meyer and Pat Forsyth):

Goal #1: We will facilitate the payment of other cabinets’ expenditures for the anniversary in 2010.

Goal #2: We will develop an Endowment, Allocated Savings and Bonnie Westby- Huebner Fund Investment Policy to be presented to the Council by July 1, 2009.

Goal #3: To improve the giving and profitability of the church in order to meet all expenditures for the current church year, we will publish financial and attendance numbers and promote Simply Giving monthly in the Parish Visitor.

Personnel Cabinet (Ann Abraham and Krin Abraham-Berg):

Goal #1: We will formulate a list of prior employees to be contacted for attendance at the anniversary celebration.

Goal #2: We will formulate a multiple staff ministry support committee to provide, on a bi-monthly basis, a sounding board for our pastoral staff.

Goal #3: By 2014, an addition of a paid “youth through adult” Bell Choir Director will be added to the non-pastoral staff.

Property Cabinet (Grant Olson: Cross of Christ Building; Justin Zmyewski: Cross of Christ Grounds; and Wayne Olson: Stone Church Property)

Cross of Christ Building Goals:

Goal #1: By the 50th Anniversary celebration, we will ensure the church facilities are aesthetically appealing to the congregation and visitors; to facilitate this goal, special attention will be given to carpeting and chairs, the wall behind the water fountain, and general painting.

Goal #2: Within the next five years, we will create secure storage areas in classrooms and remodel to create bathroom facilities on the second floor.

Cross of Christ Grounds Goals:

Goal #1: By the 50th Anniversary celebration, we will plant trees, trim and maintain existing shrubs and trees, and create a permanent outdoor display for the bell from St. Peter’s Church.

Goal #2: After researching options, we will install the best remedy to ensure the walkway on the north side of the building will be functionally safe in all weather.

Goals for the entire Cabinet:

Goal #1: We will create policies and procedures to establish a dollar amount the cabinets within the Property Cabinet can spend without Council approval for general maintenance.

Goal #2: Property Cabinet personnel will approve all maintenance bills prior to final payment of the bill to ensure work is completed properly and supplies for which payments are being made have been delivered.

Goal #3: The three property cabinets will meet monthly before the Wednesday Council meeting.

Stewardship and Mission Cabinet (Lisa Skifton):

Goal #1: To promote our mission work in the greater Houston community, the Stewardship and Mission Cabinet will encourage Cross of Christ members to volunteer at least 100 hours and fundraise a minimum of $1500 in “change” to support the Habitat for Humanity House in Houston, between April and October of 2009.

Goal #2: To provide food for the community and to promote inter-generational community relationships, the Stewardship and Mission Cabinet will invite Cross of Christ members to volunteer in the community garden weekly from June to September.  To facilitate this goal, we will need at least 5 people to work for at least one hour on each Sunday between 10 A.M and 1 P.M and on each Wednesday between 6 P.M. and 8 P.M.

Goal #3: Stewardship and Mission will sponsor at least one educational activity per year for the next ten years to increase awareness of good stewardship habits.

Worship and Music Cabinet (Garry Edwards):

Goal #1: We will have a completed plan by October 1, 2009, to create an historic service during which the union of St. Peters and the Stone Church and the building of Cross of Christ will be celebrated.

Goal #2: By the annual meeting we will continue to modify the worship services to make them appealing to a wide range of worshippers.

Goal #3: By 2012, the worship service will be presented in a more user-friendly manner, including visual and aural enhancements, to increase attendance by 20 percent.

Youth and Family Cabinet (Denise Thompson):

Goal #1: By the 50th Anniversary celebration, we will build a testimony, which includes one or two testimonies from each generational group and relates how involvement in the church and / or the events sponsored by the church changed their lives.

Goal #2: To increase Youth and Family program participation by 30 percent, we will build opportunities that increase and encourage participation in our church family.

Goal #3: In conjunction with the Worship Cabinet, the Youth and Family Cabinet will arrange participation of the youth in the worship service once a month; this participation could be special music, a special reading or a skit and would build ownership and engagement for Youth and Families within the worship service.

We look forward to working toward obtaining each and every goal and to your input.

I would like to thank the cabinet members who worked so diligently and gave so uncomplainingly of their time to complete this first task in our journey to continually improve everything that Cross of Christ has to offer its parishioners and the greater community as well.

Yours in Christ,

President Krin Abraham-Berg
